Building castles in the sand can win you big money at the 2014 Beach Community Bank Fiesta Sand Sculpture Contest. This family favorite event takes to the shores of Pensacola Beach this Sunday, May 18
th from 8 am to 2 pm. One of the most unique and tedious art forms in our area, this event allows amateur and professional sand sculptors alike to try their hand at winning the big grand prize.
Held at the Pensacola Beach Gulfside Pavilion (3 Casino Beach Blvd.), this fun in the sun event will amaze even the most critical artistic eye when you see the transformation our sugary white sands will undergo.
Once again, the contest will feature professional sand sculptors and best friends Rusty Croft and Kirk Rademaker from the Travel Channel’s hit show “Sand Masters”, for a demonstration on Sunday of Fiesta Family Weekend, a weekend of free events for the community. Participants in the Sand Sculpture Contest can also get some pointers from Croft and Rademaker throughout the day.
Croft and Rademaker are no strangers to the Gulf Coast. “These are some of my favorite beaches in the world. What could be better than clear water and white sand? The locals are always welcoming and lots of fun,” Croft said.
Rademaker agrees adding, “Everyone has always welcomed us with open arms here on the Emerald Coast. People are always curious about what we are doing in the sand. Sand sculptures at the beach are a catalyst for positive human interaction.”
13 awards will be presented, and more than $1,900 in cash and prizes are up for grabs in categories such as guppy (2-4), youth (5-12), teen (13-17), adult (18 and up), and open (semi-pro and pro). Awards in the guppy and youth divisions will be 1
st place- $75, 2nd place- $50, and 3rd place- $25. Awards in the teen division will be 1st place- $100, 2nd place- $50, and 3rd place- $25.
Awards in the adult division will feature 1

Registration begins at 8 am and judging will begin promptly at 1 pm. There is no fee to enter. Download the registration form on www.FiestaofFiveFlags.org or register the day of the event at the Beach Community Bank welcome tent. Teams in all division are limited to 1-3 persons except the Open division which is limited to 1-2 persons.
The Fiesta of Five Flags Awards Ceremony and prize presentation will take place at the Beach Community Bank welcome tent beginning at 2 pm. All registered contestants are asked to be close by the presentation area. Award winners (entire team) will be asked to come up to receive prizes and pose for photographs.
Each team will have assigned an approximate area of 20 x 20. Each team is responsible for picking their site. Only registered teammates are allowed in the work area at any time. Any number of helpers may be recruited for work outside area to haul water up to perimeter of sculpture, organize tools, or cheer.
Sculptures must consist of beach sand and water only. Only naturally occurring, and biodegradable items found on the beach that day such as seaweed and shells may be used for decorations. No ingredients may be mixed with sand to improve the texture. Powdered tempera paint or food coloring may be used for color but spray paint is not permitted.
Judging is based on originality (clever idea, fresh approach, etc.), technical difficulty and intricacy (pushing the sand to its limits), and overall appearance. All teams risk disqualification if all rules are not met, and all judges’ decisions are final.
