By: Kelly Woodard

People of all ages and skill levels will swarm the island to swim, bike, and run their way to victory at the Pensacola Beach Triathlon this Saturday, May 17
th at 7 am on the beautiful white sands of Pensacola Beach. The nature of the sport focuses on persistent and often interlude training in each of the three disciplines, as well as combination workouts and general strength conditioning.
Participants will begin with a 300 Yard Swim, followed by a 10 Mile Bike and a 3 Mile Run along scenic Via de Luna Drive. The will be a swim in the protected Sound behind Flounders.
According to, athletes should plan on the terrain being flat and the pace being fast, so train for speed. As with all Triathlons, endurance is also key. Triathletes compete for fastest overall course completion time, including timed "transitions" between the individual swim, cycle, and run components.
Transition areas are positioned both between the swim and bike segments (T1), and between the bike and run segments (T2) and are where the switches from swimming to cycling and cycling to running occur. These areas are used to store bicycles, performance apparel, and any other accessories needed for preparing for the next stage of the race.
While athletes are encouraged to bring the whole family to spectate the event, there will be some rules that all spectators will need to follow. The swim has a long pier for an amazing view of the entire swim. After the swim proceed to the transition area in the Casino beach parking lot to see the bike finish and run finish. Be sure to stay out of transition areas so your family member does not receive a penalty.
After the race, be sure to celebrate your big finish at the T3 After Party to be held at Flounder’s Chowder House. There will be plenty of food and drinks for all participants to enjoy for free, as well as live entertainment and a full menu for spectators to enjoy.
Registration is still open for those who wish to participate. To register online, visit Individual registration is $75 and 2 person relay team registration fees are $140.
